When was Surah Muzzammil Revealed?

Two parts of Surah Muzzammil were revealed at different times. The first part (1-19) is a Meccan (Miccan) revelation, As proven by its subject and hadiths. While the second (verse 20) is called Madani (Madinian) revelation.

First Part (1-19)

The tradition does not say when it was revealed in Mecca, but the internal evidence of the subject of this section helps to determine the period of its revelation.

Thus we know:-

First of all, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has been instructed in it: “Get up at night and worship Allah so that you may be able to carry the heavy burden of prophethood and fulfill its responsibilities.” ‘.

This shows that this order must have been given in the early period of Prophethood when Allah was still preparing the Holy Prophet.

It also includes the Qur’anic message that the Qur’an should be recited in Tahajjud prayer until midnight or more. This order itself indicates that by that time at least a large part of the Holy Qur’an had been revealed which could be recited by that time.

The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has been encouraged to be patient with the excesses of his opponents who have been threatened with torture.

This shows that this verse was revealed at a time when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had begun to spread Islam openly and the resistance against him had become active and powerful in Mecca.

Second Part (verse 20)

Although many commentators believe that the second part (verse 20) was also revealed in Mecca. Some other commentators believe that it is a Madani revelation that was revealed 10 years after the first part, which is also supported by the text of this part.

Because it includes fighting in the way of Allah, and certainly in Makkah there is no doubt about that. It also enjoins the payment of obligatory zakat, and it is fully confirmed that zakat was imposed in Madinah at a certain rate and with an exception limit (nasab).

The second part consists of a long verse. In this section, Allah Ta’ala ordered the Muslims to pay the required Zakat. The limit of Zakat (Nisaab) was established. And how to fulfill this responsibility, it is important to reach out to those in need.
